TUCP opens training program for call center agents

To address the steadily increasing demand for call center workers in the country, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines (TUCP) has set up its own training program for call center agents.

Already in its second week, the TUCP Finishing Course for Call Center Agents has recruited some 200 trainees.  The course is one of the programs offered by the TUCP under its Workers College Program.

The TUCP is conducting the training in cooperation with the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

The TUCP said that the recruitment started second week of October. The trainees underwent a qualifying exam supervised by the TESDA.  The exam consisted of a 10-minute computer based interview where the proficiency of an applicant in the English language is rated.

Upon qualification, the trainees are entitled to a P5,000 training voucher which they use to enroll in the month-long program.  Classes are held everyday at the TUCP Training Center in Diliman.

The program is open to 18 to 55 years old and accepts applicants even without college degrees.

The TUCP quoting statistics from the Government said that for this year alone, the call center industry needs some 120,000 workers.  The TUCP added that in the next four years a million call center agents will be needed by the industry.

TUCP President Democrito T. Mendoza also announced that the TUCP will expand its programs to include other skills based training programs to include electronics, welding, reflexology and other tourism related skills, computer maintenance and repair, among others.

“Under our Workers College Program we will develop a pool of highly skilled workers and work with industry to facilitate their employment”, Mendoza added.

Mendoza added that the TUCP programs will be open to dependents of TUCP members and the public.
